OUR STANDARD

What excellence in Shotokan karate means to us

The Karate Kave is a Shotokan karate organisation in Mumbai, India, run to one standard in every class. These are the four things we will not compromise on.

Authentic Shotokan.

Kihon, kata and kumite taught to the traditional syllabus, the way Funakoshi’s karate was meant to be trained.

Belts that are earned.

Gradings roughly every six months, and nobody is put forward before they are ready.

Senior instruction.

Sensei Tushar Petkar, 3rd Dan, leads the teaching himself, in batches of twelve, so every student is corrected, not just counted.

Open and accountable.

Fees published, a written code of conduct and child protection policy, and parents welcome to watch any class.

[CONFIRM: registration / affiliation line, e.g. “Affiliated to [federation]” or “Registered [trust/society/company] since [year]” — publish only if verifiable]

YOUR INSTRUCTOR

Sensei Tushar Petkar, your Shotokan karate instructor

3RD DAN SHOTOKAN · CHIEF INSTRUCTOR

Sensei Petkar has taught Shotokan karate in Mumbai since 2010 and leads The Karate Kave’s syllabus, grading and teaching standards. At the main dojo in Kandivali East he takes every class himself, from a five-year-old’s first bow to an adult’s black belt grading. His focus is the part of karate that carries outside the dojo: control, discipline and respect.

SAFETY

Karate for children, with safety before sparring

The question most parents ask first, answered in full before we talk about fees.

No head contact under 12

Shotokan is a controlled art. Children learn to stop a technique before it lands, and that control is what gets graded, not force.

  • Kumite (sparring) for under-12s is light-touch, to the body only
  • Mitts, shin guards and a mouthguard for every partner drill
  • Partners matched by size and belt, never by who is keenest
  • Any child may sit out a drill without being asked why

Supervision and first aid

You will always know who is teaching your child. At our main dojo, Sensei Petkar takes every class himself.

  • One instructor, twelve children, no assistant teaching unsupervised
  • Sensei Petkar holds a current first-aid certificate
  • Parents may stay in the hall for every class
  • Ground-floor hall with a single entrance, in sight of the desk

On aggression: children are taught that karate belongs in the dojo and for protecting themselves, nowhere else. A child who uses a technique at school is taken off partner work until we have spoken to you.

A TYPICAL KIDS’ CLASS

What one kids’ karate class looks like

Sixty minutes, the same shape every session. Children settle faster when they know what comes next.

10 MIN

Line up and warm up.

Shoes off, line up by belt, seiza and rei. Joint mobility and running games, with no static stretching at this age.

20 MIN

Kihon

Shotokan basics. Stance, blocks, one punch, one kick. Repetition in the air, facing the mirror. Nothing hits anything.

15 MIN

Kata.

The Shotokan kata for their belt, broken into four counts at a time. This is where visible progress shows up.

10 MIN

Pad and partner work.

Light contact onto a pad held by Sensei, or a supervised partner drill. Gear on, adult watching.

5 MIN

Close.

Line up, dojo kun, rei. Sensei gives each child one thing to practise before the next class.

ABOUT SHOTOKAN

New to Shotokan karate?

Shotokan is a traditional Japanese karate style developed by Gichin Funakoshi, known for deep stances, strong straight-line techniques and precise kata. Every class at The Karate Kave is built on its three parts: kihon, kata and kumite.

The tiger in our badge is the traditional Shotokan tiger symbol. Our guides are written for Shotokan students and parents anywhere in India. [CONFIRM client is happy to state this]

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

The things parents ask on WhatsApp before they book.

Where does The Karate Kave teach Shotokan karate in Mumbai?

The Karate Kave’s main dojo is the Valley of Flowers hall in Thakur Village, Kandivali East, Mumbai 400101, a five-minute walk from Thakur Complex. Kids, teen and adult classes run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings, and the women’s self-defence batch meets on Sunday mornings. [CONFIRM any other dojos, school programmes or online classes to add here]

What age can my child start karate?

Five is the youngest we take. The 5–8 batch is built around short drills and games, so a five-year-old is not expected to hold a stance for ten minutes.

How much do Shotokan karate classes cost?

At The Karate Kave, kids batches cost ₹1,200 a month or ₹3,300 a quarter, and a second sibling pays ₹900 a month. There is no admission fee, and the first class is free.

Will karate make my child aggressive?

No, and we watch for it. Children are taught that techniques belong in the dojo. Using one at school means sitting out partner work until we have spoken to you.

Does my child have to spar?

Not to train, and not to grade below green belt. Under-12 sparring is light-touch, to the body only, in full gear, and any child may sit out.

Can I stay and watch the class?

Yes, every class. There are chairs along the side wall. We would rather you watched than wondered.

I am an adult with no experience. Can I join?

Yes. The 7:30 pm batch has adult beginners training together, and nobody spars across age groups. [CONFIRM current number of adult beginners if you want to state it]

What does my child need on day one?

Loose clothes, a water bottle and bare feet. Buy the uniform only if they decide to continue.

What if we miss classes for exams or travel?

Tell us in advance and we pause the fee for a full month. There is no contract to break.

Is The Karate Kave affiliated to a Shotokan association?

[CONFIRM — answer only with the real affiliation, membership number or registration; delete this question if there is none]

Will my child learn self-defence at The Karate Kave?

Yes. Every class builds the basics of self-defence: balance, distance, timing and strong technique. Children are also taught to stay aware, avoid trouble and use karate only to protect themselves, never to start a fight. More on Shotokan and self-defence

How long does it take to get a black belt in Shotokan karate?

Usually five to six years of regular training, and not before age 14. Grading is optional, happens roughly every six months, and nobody is rushed. [CONFIRM against syllabus and cadet black belt policy]
